Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Shopify theme detector work?
It fetches the store's homepage HTML and scans for Shopify-specific markers: the Shopify.theme JavaScript object, theme_store_id references, stylesheet filenames on the Shopify CDN, and meta tags. These fingerprints reveal the theme name, version, and whether it's a free or paid theme.
What if it says "Custom Theme"?
If the result shows "Custom Theme," the store is likely using a bespoke theme built from scratch or a heavily modified version of an existing theme. Some stores also strip or rename theme metadata, which makes automated detection impossible.
Does this work with password-protected stores?
No. Password-protected stores don't serve the theme's HTML to public visitors, so the detector can't analyze the source code. The store needs to be publicly accessible for detection to work.
Can I detect themes on non-Shopify sites?
No. This tool is specifically designed for Shopify stores. It looks for Shopify-specific code patterns that only exist on sites built with Shopify. For other platforms, you'd need a different detection method.
